Course Description

WHAT TO EXPECT

The Go TEFL Spain Seville TESOL Certification course is an intensive 120hr (4 weeks) teacher certification program.  Our emphasis is on practicality so trainees can rest assured that they´ll be prepared for the classroom once they´ve earned our certification.  There is no need to speak any language other than English and through our course, we´ll show trainees the value of an English-only classroom and how to facilitate great lessons through our communicative approach – which is an international standard used worldwide.

I. Teaching Practice

This is what makes our in-class courses so practical.  It´s the most fundamental area of training and many consider it to be invaluable (in fact, necessary for landing a teaching job).  Trainees will teach real EFL students and put new-found skills into practice immediately.  This will help trainees see exactly how to perfect their teaching skills.

II. Foreign Language Experience

So future EFL teachers can better understand where their students are coming from, we provide trainees with instruction in an unknown language.  This way, trainees will have a better idea of what it´s like for EFL students when they´re learning English.  Of course, trainees will become better teachers because of it and get an introduction into a new language.

III. Language Awareness

GRAMMAR:  We´ll cover the tenses, parts of speech and other language points such as conditionals, passive voice and reported speech.  Through easy-to-follow lessons and fun activities, we´ll teach these points and show trainees how to teach them to students – the approaches are entirely different.

PHONOLOGY: We´ll cover English pronunciation through learning how to use the International Phonemic Alphabet, inotation, word and setence stress, as well as articulation and connected speech.  As a result, teacher trainees will become more aware of how sounds are made within a language and be better able to help their students improve their pronunciation.

IV. Student Profile

Each trainee will be asked to meet with an individual student so as to work on rapport building, error analysis and correction as well as addressing individual needs.  Three meetings are required for the profile and they will culminate in a one-to-one lesson, after which, the trainee will write a report about the lesson.

V. Teaching Techniques

Lesson Planning

Classroom Management

Establishing Rapport

Discipline in the Classroom

Managing Equipment and Teaching Aids

Creating Materials

Communicative Activities

Correction Techniques

Evaluation and Testing

Teaching Vocabulary

Teaching Grammar

Teaching Receptive Skills (Reading & Listening)

Teaching Production Skills (Speaking & Writing)

Games in the Classroom

Songs in the Classroom

Teaching Beginner Students

Teaching Individual Students

VI. Materials Project

Trainees will be required to take raw materials and convert them into teaching materials.  The trainee will be charged with designing games and constructing materials to accompany the games.  These games must be original and will help foster the teacher’s creativity and resourcefullness.  Projects should be durable, reusable, and adaptable.  Once finished, trainees will present their game to a trainer, who’ll make suggestions on how to improve them before actually using them in the classroom.

There is a Job Guidance Centre within Go TEFL Spain, which is set up in order to advise you on finding work as an EFL teacher during and after the course

Visas, Credits & Jobs

VISAS

We can help you obtain a 6-month student visa under which you can legally work 20 hours/week. However, it’s important you know we do not require you to have a student visa in order to take our program.  In the end it is a personal preference. There is no harm in doing it if you have the time, then you can decide once here how you would like to proceed.

Count on the visa application process taking around 8 weeks. If you are interested in this option, please contact the Spanish embassy closest to where you live and ask them what specific documentation they require. What they generally ask for is:

– A formal invitation letter

– Your proof of non-criminal record

– Proof of round trip airline tickets

– Proof of funds

– Health insurance for the time you will be away

– Complete copy of your passport

Once in Spain there is a series of steps you will need to take. You will be informed about this once here in Spain.

JOBS

There is a very high demand for qualified teachers in Spain, and even more so in the south. The Program Director is constantly contacted by local schools looking for qualified teachers. During the program you will also receive an input called Job Information Session where you will be shown where and how to look for work. Everyone who has successfully completed our program has found work afterwards.

COLLEGE CREDIT

After having successfully completed the TESOL certification program you will be able to apply for and obtain US university credit. Once having completed the program you will be informed on how to proceed.

Living in Sevilla

ABOUT SEVILLA

Whether you want to relax in the sun or party till dawn; wander winding, cobbled lanes or immerse yourself in the history of Southern Spain, Seville is the place for you.  Seville is the capital of the province of Andalucia and Spain’s fourth largest city.  With both a Roman and Arabic past, the city has an abundance of history to be found around its beautiful streets.

WEATHER

Summer – During the summer months, June to September, Seville experiences the hottest weather when the day temperatures hardly fall below 30ºC with the average around 36º C (97º F).  Throughout the season, Seville sees a great deal of sunshine.  Moreover, the city remains very dry since the summer months bring almost no rain.

Winter – Throughout winter, December through February, Seville maintains a mild temperature.  Although January is considered the coldest month it has an average high temperature of 15º C (59 º F) and a minimum of 6º C (43º F).  During this season Seville generally receives 8-10 days of brief yet heavy rain per month.

Autumn and Spring – During the Autumn and Spring seasons, Seville sees a varied mix of rain and sunshine.  The average temperature reamains in the mid 20s C in Spring.  However, it may climb to close to 30º C in May.  Spring brings a remarkably rainy period, usually concentrated to a few, very heavy storms.  Autumn is similar.  These are arguably the best seasons to visit Seville, as the night time temperature remains cool enough for a comfortable rest.

FESTIVALS AND CARNIVALS

SEMANA SANTA – The first is Semana Santa (Easter Week) which is truly spectacular with extraordinary processions of masked penitents and large religious floats.  People travel from across the county and around the world to witness this annual week-long event.

FERIA DE ABRIL –  Next comes Feria de Abril or April Fair which is possibly the largest annual fair in Andalucía.  This is a week long party full of drinks, food, fino (sherry wine) and flamenco.

LUNES DE ROCÍO – Other celebrations that take place in Seville include the Rocío pilgrimage.

CORPUS CHRISTI  and VIRGEN DE LOS REYES – Corpus Christi is also observed in Seville on May 31st, as well as the patron saint day, the “Virgen de los Reyes” (Virgin of the Kings), which falls on August 15th.

COST OF LIVING

Seville is inexpensive compared to many other European cities. You can have lunch for less than 10€. Seville is a city full of students and many places have student prices.  For living, you can rent out your own apartment, or rent out a room in a shared apartment for as little as 200-350€ a month.

everything you need to know!

Will I find work after completing the program?

There is a very high demand for qualified teachers in Spain, and even more so in the south. The Program Director is constantly contacted by local schools looking for qualified teachers. During the program you will also receive an input called Job Information Session where you will be shown where and how to look for work. Everyone who has successfully completed our program has found work afterwards.

Do you offer any job guidance? Do you guarantee a job?

Yes we do provide lifetime job guidance. During the program you will also receive an input called Job Information Session where you will be shown where and how to look for work. The Program Director is constantly contacted by schools country wide looking for qualified teachers. Every month she sends an updated list with new graduate contact information along with those graduates who have returned to Spain and would like to teach again.

Where can I work?

You can work anywhere in the world where English is needed! The Go TEFL Spain (by TEFL International Seville) TESOL certificate is the most recognized teaching certificate worldwide. There are many Seville graduates that have worked and are currently working abroad.

How much teaching practice is there? What will I teach?

You will have around 10+ hours of observed teaching practice after which you will be given feedback. You will teach groups and in privates with different levels of English, all from basic to advanced. You will be taught different teaching methods, how to teach exam preparation, topic based lessons and effective conversation classes.

What´s the schedule like?

The schedule varies depending on how many students there are in the program. Since many people tend to sign-up last minute, the schedule is not set until a few days before the program starts.  However, the schedule tends to be from 11:00–21:00 Monday through Thursday and 11:00–18:00 on Fridays, but is always subject to change.  There is an hour for lunch and two “coffee breaks.” You will have inputs in the mornings and teaching practices in the evenings.

What will I learn in the program?

During the 4 week program you will be taught everything from phonology, grammar, lesson planning, appropriate language, theatre techniques, classroom management, communicative activities, error correction, how to adapt textbooks to materials creation. You will also be put through foreign language classes in which you will analyze what it’s like to be a student learning a second language. There are approximately 10 observed teaching practices of which you will be given feedback afterwards. The Spanish students in the teaching practices have a basic, intermediate and advanced level of English.

Do I need a college degree to join the program?

No, you do not need a degree to join the program. We require that our students have a high, fluent level of English and are open to learning new things.

Can I apply for university credit?

After having successfully completed the TESOL certification program you will be able to apply for and obtain US university credit. Once having completed the program you will be informed on how to proceed.

Why would I need the TESOL Certificate if I have a degree in teaching?

The requirement to teach English as a foreign language in private academies is to have a valid TESOL certificate. This certificate is a proof that you know and have received training in teaching English to speakers of other languages. You will specialize in teaching English only using English in a dynamic, personalized and communicative way. The reason the private academies don’t hire people who only have a college degree in teaching is because there needs to be focus and experience in teaching English as a second/foreign language.

How does the student visa work?

What do I need to study/buy/ready before I come? What do I need to bring?

On the first day we provide you with a portfolio containing all the documents for the program, a notebook and a pencil. You will be creating your own lessons and materials for most of your lessons. We will show you where you can buy items needed to do so inexpensively. We recommend that you bring a laptop and a flash drive as you will find them very useful for your daily work. However, please know that this is not a requirement. There are internet cafés throughout the city. Some of your assignments are handmade and handwritten and others need to be typed and emailed.

When do I have to make the final payment?

The remaining course balance is due no later than the 1st day of the program. It can be paid online with debit or credit card, upon arrival in cash in Euros, via a transfer to our American bank account in US Dollars, via PayPal in Euros or via a transfer to our Spanish bank account in Euros.

What is part-time?

The part-time program is usually recommend to those who are working at the same time, have children or other time commitments which makes it impossible for them to join the full-time 4 week program. In order to do the part time program you would need to join week 1 of any 4-week full-time program which means that the dates are the same as you can see on the website. After that you would then sit down with the Program Director who then creates a tailor made schedule that will suit your availability and the school’s. We do always recommend the 4 week program if at all possible, however once idea could be to start full time and then decide how to continue what to do once having completed week 1.

How much does a teacher make?

In Sevilla, it varies from school to school and if you are teaching on site, at a business or privately. An English teacher can make anywhere from 8–20€/hour. If you have a full time job you earn around 1000€/month. This may sound little to you depending on where you are from, however please note that with this salary you live well in Seville as it is rather inexpensive compared to many other European cities.  Some English teachers combine academy work with private lessons and therefore make more.

Of course, not everyone who takes the course stays in Sevilla.  You can travel to wherever you want to teach English.  Other parts of the world will have different pay ranges.

What´s the cost of living in Seville?

Seville is inexpensive compared to many other European cities. You can have lunch for less than 10€. Seville is a city full of students and many places have student prices. Here is a website which shows the cost of living in Seville: https://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/seville.

Do I need to take Spanish to take the program?

Knowing Spanish is not a requirement to take the program, as it is 100% in English. However, we offer free Spanish language classes to all of our students during the program.
